Glass music for piano combineert een zo droog en hard mogelijk klankbeeld met een zo soepel en elastisch mogelijke vorm. Het eerstgenoemde element ontstaat niet alleen door de beperking tot toetsen en pedaal maar vooral door een voortdurende staccato-techniek in de aanslag. Het tweede element is gerealiseerd door een aan de gulden-snede-techniek verwante ritmische continuïteit, die micro- en macroritmiek rechtstreeks met elkaar in verband brengt via uitgeschreven en exact gedoseerde accelerando en ritardando zinsbouw.
Glass is an impossible material. You can look clean through it, like through air or water, but you cannot get into it, let alone drink it or breathe it. And if you try, inversely, to get it into you, you are surely in for internal haemorrhage and serious trouble.
It seems only to consist of its totally unbreakable outer shell: when you think you broke it, it has only multiplied itself, it has become many pieces instead of one, and it still protects the same amount of impenetrable space.
This poses a problem which is closely related to the theological one of our bodily reality. The music's aim is to contribute to defining it. Solving it is a problem of action, not of thought, and music is only thought.
