Music is a language in which structural organization can be experienced by the
intelligent listener and in which (surely present) semantic aspects are not of the same order as those of
the languages that are object and instrument of linguistics. There should be absolute silence about its
content, the instrument is not adapted to the object. Whether the structure will concern the listener is a
great question. In my opinion only its existence is of importance to them, its organization can be analysed
positively, but that is the work of musicologists. Composers sometimes give information more or less by
chance about their production-techniques, which include both the author's psychology and the work's
structure and do certainly not coincide with the latter. Musicologists are therefore recommended to consult
the score.

music 1973". Gaudeamus foundation 73002)
Misschien is
muziek nog wel ergens goed voor.
The composer refrains from commenting on his individual pieces. Describing the production process
is, in as far as it is at all possible, probably quite irrelevant. Music is almost exclusively built on
non-verbal (e.g. motor) concepts, and nobody today is really wel-equipped to handle those without grossly
falsifying them. But I also do not think we need such equipment in the usual music listening situation. Let
each listener just open his ears and think of anything. If everything goes well, the music will then capture
his thinking, and at least give form, even if not substance, to it. And it might very well be that producing
frames of thought within which important ideas may take root, flourish and breed is, in the long run, even
more effective than just putting forward important ideas.
Maybe music is good for something, after all.
The composer has, in the same way as all others, a right to his opinions on the
present piece, but he cannot claim to be the final judge of what it means, or needs from its players.
Players will (it is hoped) choose to do it for a reason, and this reason should be none other than their
musical idea of it. Therefore, they should always answer all and any questions arising about it by reference
to that idea.
